PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

This program is designed for students with an active, unencumbered LPN or EMT license who are interested in becoming a Registered Nurse. Upon completion of this program, the graduate will be eligible to sit for the Florida Board of Nursing Licensure Examination requirement NCLEX-RN. Once licensed, graduates will be able to work as an entry-level Registered Nurse (RN).

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The program is designed to offer students foundational academic knowledge, health sciences, and core nursing principles in a course sequence that builds cognition and skills upon earlier learning experiences. Students in this program will learn the health science knowledge required for the execution of the nursing process which is central to the scope of practice of the Registered Nurse (RN). The program is built upon the specific requirements of FS464.019 of the Florida Nurse Practice Act. Students will undergo routine educational assessment to measure knowledge and skills throughout each phase of the competency-based curriculum, proving cognition and psychomotor development throughout each stage and modality of the program.

COURSE SCHEDULING POLICY

A student in the LPN-RN Program at Riggs College may take a maximum of 4 classes per semester. The table below classifies each course according to its appropriate class value. If all prerequisites are all completed, classes completed in the "2 Classes" category can only be combined in a manner that culminates to 4 classes. The only exception to this new policy is during the final term when students will be able to take 5 classes (Nursing Leadership, Community w/clinical, and Geriatrics w/clinical).

Prerequisites must be completed prior to being enrolled in a core nursing class.

CREDENTIAL GRANTED UPON COMPLETION

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an Associates of Science Degree in Nursing.

DELIVERY METHOD

PROGRAM LENGTH

Full time students complete the program in 65 weeks.Students transferring the general education courses and enrolling to the nursing courses only, complete the program in 41 weeks.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Prospective students must comply with the admissions requirements as stated in this catalog under the admissions section.

EXTERNSHIP POLICY

Riggs College students must complete all clinical hours satisfactorily. The complete Externship Policy is included as a section in this catalog and reviewed with each student prior to enrollment.

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENT FOR EMPLOYMENT

Riggs College graduates of the ASN program are required to pass the NCLEX-RN state certification exam and obtain and maintain an active residential state RN license to receive employment as a Registered Nurse. For information regarding the NCLEX-RN examination and eligibility requirements, visit the Florida Board of Nursing www.floridasnursing.gov.

ADDITIONAL FEES NOT INCLUDED IN THE PROGRAM

PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY INSURANCE

Progfessional LIability Insurance is required prior to the student’s first clinical. The cost for each student is $115.00 to be paid by the student, included in the program’s tuition and fees under "Other Costs". The Professional Liability Insurance provides students the following benefits:

LPN TO RN GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES REQUIREMENT

Students must fulfill general education requirements to graduate. Students with 2 or more General Education courses may take nursing core classes in tandem while completing general education classes.
