Associates of Science in Criminal Justice

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

An Associate in Science (AS) Degree in Criminal Justice will prepare students to work in entry level positions within the criminal justice field and to transition smoothly into a Bachelor in Science (BS) program in Criminal Justice.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The program is designed to offer students foundational academic awareness of the field of criminal justice, with basic knowledge in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, courts, corrections, and law enforcement. Through online asynchronous learning, students will explore the roles of the criminal justice professional, the theories behind crime and punishment, and the ethics of criminal justice practice. Students will learn the research methods necessary to study and explore the field while professionally documenting their findings. Students who complete this program will be able to continue on to the Bachelor in Science (BS) degree program in Criminal Justice.

GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES REQUIREMENT

Students must fulfill general education requirements to graduate. Students with 2 or more General Education courses may take Criminal Justice core courses in tandem while completing general education classes.

A Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree in Criminal Justice will prepare students for criminal justice careers in legal administration, law enforcement, and corrections. Graduates will become well-rounded professionals in the criminal justice field, with specialized knowledge in criminal law and procedure.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The program is designed to offer students foundational academic awareness of the field of criminal justice, with basic knowledge in the areas of criminal law, criminal procedure, courts, corrections, and law enforcement. Through online asynchronous learning, students will explore the roles of the criminal justice professional, the theories behind crime and punishment, and the ethics of criminal justice practice. Students will learn the research methods necessary to study and explore the field while professionally documenting their findings. The program will also introduce students to different types of criminal behavior, such as violent crime, domestic crime, sex offenses, risk assessment and program evaluation methods, advanced research methods, including qualitative research, interviewing, interrogation and identification and the media’s role in the criminal justice system. At the end of the program, students will have a chance to complete a Capstone project, focusing on an area of special interest to them.
